The story
Anne Catherine Emmerich was a bedridden Augustinian nun in Westphalia who died in 1824 having never travelled. Her visions, written down by the poet Clemens Brentano, included a detailed description of a small stone house on a mountain near Ephesus where Mary had lived out her last years, and of the landscape around it.
In 1891 two Lazarist priests from İzmir went looking, using the text as a description. They found the ruins of a small building on Bülbül Dağı that matched, on a site with a spring, on the right mountain, at roughly the right distance from the sea.
What that proves is a matter for you. Several popes have visited. The Catholic Church has never issued a formal declaration of authenticity and describes it as a place of pilgrimage rather than an article of faith.
What you actually see
A small, restored chapel of stone, dark inside, with a single room and an altar. It takes four minutes to walk through, and there is usually a queue.
Outside: a spring with taps where people fill bottles, and a wall covered in fabric strips and paper notes left as petitions. Muslim visitors come here too — Mary is honoured in the Qur'an — and the wall is one of the genuinely moving things in the area, regardless of what you believe about the house.

Whether to go
It depends entirely on whether it means something to you.
For a religious visitor, or anyone curious about how a place becomes holy, it is worth the road. For someone here for the archaeology, be honest: this is a small restored building with a strong atmosphere and no ancient fabric on show, and the round trip costs you the Terrace Houses.
On a short cruise call you will usually have to choose. Most tour itineraries include it because the transfer is easy to sell, not because the time balance is right.
Is the House of the Virgin Mary worth visiting?
It depends what you want from it. As a shrine it is powerful; as archaeology there is very little to see, and the round trip costs about ninety minutes.
