Everything about a cruise day is decided by one number you do not control, so plan from it backwards.

Six hours ashore — about 3½ hours on the ground
Ephesus, properly, and nothing else.
- 08:30 off the ship
- 09:15 Upper Gate
- 12:15 Lower Gate, having done the site and the Terrace Houses
- 12:45 back at the port
Do not add the House of the Virgin Mary to this. It is a forty-minute round trip up a mountain road and it will cost you the Terrace Houses.
Eight hours ashore — about 5½ hours
Ephesus plus one thing.
Either the Ephesus Archaeological Museum in Selçuk — ten minutes from the Lower Gate, indoors, air conditioned, and where the best sculpture from the site actually is — or the House of the Virgin Mary, which matters if it matters to you and is a pleasant drive if it does not.
Lunch in Selçuk rather than at the site. The places by the Lower Gate exist to catch people leaving.
Ten hours or more — about 7½
Ephesus, Selçuk, and Şirince in the hills, or a swim at Pamucak on the way back. This is a good day.
Going independently
Entirely doable and much cheaper than the ship's excursion. Two rules:
- Agree the taxi properly — Upper Gate drop, Lower Gate collection, price fixed before you get in. See getting there from the port.
- Keep the margin. The ship will sail. Independent passengers are not held for.
What a ship excursion actually buys
Not access, and not a better guide. It buys the guarantee that the ship waits if the coach is late. On a tight call that is worth real money. On a nine-hour call it is worth much less.
The middle option — a private guide who runs the day to your ship's clock and knows what the margin has to be — is what most people who have done this once choose the second time.
How much time do you need ashore at Kuşadası for Ephesus?
At least six hours, which leaves about three and a half on the ground once transfers and a sensible margin are taken out.
Can you do Ephesus and the House of the Virgin Mary in one cruise call?
Comfortably on an eight-hour call. On six hours it costs you the Terrace Houses.
Is it safe to visit Ephesus independently from a cruise ship?
Yes. The port is in the middle of town and taxis wait at the gate. Keep a return margin — ships do not wait for independent passengers.
