Two variables run the day at Ephesus: how hot it is, and how many ships are in. Both are predictable, and both are solved by moving an hour.

The site has no shade

This is the thing to understand before anything else. Ephesus is a marble street on a south-facing slope with almost no standing structures to stand behind. There are trees at the very top and the very bottom, and one useful roof — the Terrace Houses — and that is it.

In August the paving reads well above the air temperature and the reflected glare off white marble is punishing. A thirty-eight degree afternoon at Ephesus is not the same as a thirty-eight degree afternoon in a town.

By month

April to mid-June. The best of it. Warm, green, wildflowers on the slope, and the mornings are cool enough to walk properly. May is close to perfect.

Late June to early September. Hot, and busy with it. Go at opening or in the evening; the middle of the day is endurance rather than sightseeing. This is also when the night opening runs, and it is the best answer to the season.

Mid-September to early November. The second good window. Still warm, the sea is still swimmable, the crowds thin from October, and the light in the last hour is the best of the year.

December to March. Quiet, cool, occasionally wet, and the marble is genuinely slippery when it rains. Shorter opening hours. But you will have Curetes Street more or less to yourself, which is a trade some people will happily make.

By hour

The gates open at 08:30. The first coaches from the cruise berth reach the Upper Gate somewhere between 09:45 and 10:15, and from then until about one o'clock the site holds most of the day's visitors.

  • 08:30 to 09:45 — the best ninety minutes of the day. Cool, quiet, sun still low.
  • 10:00 to 13:00 — peak. Everything is busy and the narrow parts queue.
  • 13:00 to 15:30 — thinning as ships call people back, and hot.
  • 16:00 to closing — quiet again, long light, and the Terrace Houses closing at 18:00 to watch.

Ships are the crowd

Kuşadası takes cruise calls through the season, and on a heavy day several thousand passengers move through Ephesus in the same three-hour window. It is worth checking the port's published schedule before you fix a date: a Tuesday with no calls is a different site from a Wednesday with four.

You cannot avoid ships in season. You can avoid their hours.

The best single answer

Early October, at 08:30, from the Upper Gate. Warm, empty, and the low sun is on the façade of the library by the time you reach it.
