Ephesus from the Kuşadası cruise port

Kuşadası is one of the easier ports in the Mediterranean. The berth is in the middle of town, the drive to Ephesus is short, and nothing about the day is complicated except the one thing everybody gets wrong: how much time you actually have.

Do the arithmetic first

Take your all-aboard time. Then subtract, honestly:

• 30 minutes to get off the ship and out of the terminal on a busy morning
• 25 minutes each way in the car — 40 if you are in a coach that fills first
• 20 minutes of buffer you should not spend, because a ship will leave without you
• 15 minutes to walk back through the terminal and up the gangway

On a nine-hour call that leaves you around six hours, which is plenty. On a six-hour call it leaves you about three and a half, which is enough for Ephesus and nothing else. Anyone selling you Ephesus, the House of the Virgin Mary, a museum and a carpet demonstration in a four-hour window is selling you a bus tour.

Getting there

Ship excursion. Simplest, most expensive, largest group, and the ship holds the ship for you. That last point is the real product.

Private transfer or independent guide. Meets you at the port gate, uses the Upper Gate, collects you at the Lower Gate, and gets you back with margin. Costs less than the ship excursion per head for two or more people.

Taxi. There is a rank at the port gate. Expect roughly €25 to €40 one way depending on season and how well you negotiate, and agree the number before you get in. Crucially: ask the driver to drop you at the Upper Gate and meet you at the Lower Gate. Ephesus is walked one way through, and a driver waiting where he dropped you means walking the whole site twice.

Many drivers will offer to wait for a round-trip price. That is usually the better deal and removes the risk of not finding a car at the Lower Gate in the afternoon.

Dolmuş. Cheap and slow. Walk fifteen minutes from the port to the otogar, take the Selçuk minibus (about 30 minutes), then a second dolmuş or a taxi from Selçuk to the Lower Gate. Fine on a long call; too many moving parts on a short one.

Which gate

The Upper Gate, always, if someone can collect you at the bottom. The whole site is then downhill and the Library of Celsus arrives in front of you rather than behind.

Ship coaches do this automatically. Taxis do it if you ask.

Timing against the other ships

If several ships are in, everyone lands at Ephesus in the same window — roughly 09:45 to 13:00. Two ways to avoid it:

• Go first. Off the ship at opening, at the Upper Gate by 09:15, and you will have forty-five minutes before the coaches.
• Go last. Leave at 13:00 when the groups are being recalled. Hot in summer, but quiet.

What else fits

With three hours on the ground: Ephesus properly, including the Terrace Houses.

With five hours: Ephesus, plus either the Ephesus Archaeological Museum in Selçuk, ten minutes away and mostly indoors, or the House of the Virgin Mary up the mountain.

With seven or more: add Şirince, or lunch in Selçuk, or both.

Getting back on

The Lower Gate car park has taxis through the day; it thins after about five. Traffic back into Kuşadası is worst between four and six when the ships are recalling.

If you are doing this independently, build in the margin. A ship will sail without you, and the consulate letter that follows is expensive.
